He is one of the absolute super stars of Zimbabwe. Born in 1952, Oliver Mtukudzi started out on his path to legendary status back in 1977 when he joined the group Wagon Wheels, which also featured another future giant of the Zimbabwean music scene, Thomas Mapfumo. That was the very beginning, quickly followed by hit songs and a prodigious rise in profile. With this own group, Black Spirits, Mtukudzi followed Mapfumo’s example, and invented a new musical language. He loosened his ties to the all-pervading influence of Congolese rumba – and created an explosive and modern cocktail inspired by Zimbabwean traditional styles, JIT music and South African mbaqanga. Mtukudzi’s sound was a highly danceable mix with meaningful lyrics and made him a pan-African super star. His most recent album is Tsimba itsoka.
